NCAA Football 2010 - Big 12 - Part 2
by FreePicks.org staff
The Cornhuskers went 10-4 overall and easily won their Holiday Bowl appearance against Arizona last season.  The biggest accomplishment, but also most devastating moment, last year was their one-point, final second field goal loss to the Texas Longhorns.  A victory, which they could taste all the way up until the last second, would have prevented the Longhorns from playing Alabama in the National Championship game against Alabama.  Despite the outcome, fans were proud…a  ... NCAA Football 2010 - Big 12 - Part 1
by FreePicks.org staff
Instead of having the breakthrough season that fans had hoped for in 2009, the Baylor Bears finished with a 4-8 record and failed to earn bowl eligibility.  Star QB Robert Griffin tore his ACL in the third week of the season.  This year the Bears will attempt to earn their first bowl bid since 1994.  A now-healthy Griffin (with an extra year of eligibility) might just make this possible.  Expec  ... NFL Team Preview 2010 - Cleveland Browns
by FreePicks.org staff
The Browns couldn’t get anything going last year.  That is, not until the very end of the year.  Cleveland went 1-11 before winning 4 in a row at the end of the season, which included a 13-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The late-season efforts the Browns made to erase some embarrassing play might have saved Eric Mangini’s job and given Browns fans reason toi  ... NFL Team Preview 2010 - Seattle Seahawks
by FreePicks.org staff
The 2009 preseason wasn’t a very good success indicator for The Seattle Seahawks.  They went 4-0, only to lose 11 regular season games – one less loss than in their 2008 season when they went 4-12.  The Seahawks are currently 1-1 in their preseason with a 20-18 victory over the Titans during week one and a 27-24 loss against Green Bay in week 2.  They will play at Mi  ... NCAA 2010 - Know Your Stuff
by FreePicks.org staff
Betting on college football isn’t just about knowing your spreads and stats.  It’s about getting involved, knowing your stuff, knowing your teams, and knowing the storylines.  It’s about understanding the numbers, considering the “intangibles”, and making the best decision based on the information you’re presented with.  College football’s offseason was a wild one; unpredictable and full of change.  With only 45 days left, we’re almost there, and at the same time, it ain’t o  ... NFL Team Preview 2010 - Miami Dolphins
by FreePicks.org staff
After an 11-5 season in 2008, a seven win record wasn’t quite what the Dolphins were going for in 2009.  For Miami fans, a sweep of the Jets (who nearly managed to make it to the Super Bowl), made it worth something.  Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano believe that 2010 might be the season they’ll be contending to play in the Super Bowl.  Even considering  ... NFL Team Preview 2010 - Detroit Lions

NBA Finals - Celtics at Lakers - Game 1

The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers square off in the start of the NBA Finals in what should be another exciting matchup.  In what’s been a long road for both teams, it’s close to the end, but just the beginning.  The two teams play for the 12th time in the finals.  In 2008, the most recent meeting, the Celtics took the Championship.  The Lakers are favored by 5.5 points in the first game of the NBA finals.  The total is listed at 192.. NBA Free Pick - Philly at Orlando - NBA Playoffs
by FreePicks.org staff
Philadelphia’s previous two seasons showed promise for a bright future. They finished with 41 wins last year and 40 the year before. Now, for the first time in over a decade, they won’t even reach 30 wins. They are also in a disappointing division where every team is under .500 except for Boston. Andre Iguodala remains a solid player, scoring 17.2 points, getting 5.8 assists, and 6.6 rebounds per game. But it is clear that the Sixers need more star power in order to be competitive in this league. Samuel Dalembert grabs 9.6 rebounds a game. They are just 3-7 in their last ten games.. ... MORE

NBA Free Pick - Cavs at Hawks, NBA Playoffs
by FreePicks.org staff
The Cavaliers, despite clinching the Central division and Eastern Conference regular season title, have lost three games in a row. LeBron James has been out for those three games in order to prevent a needless injury. Shaquille O’neal has been out since he injured his thumb on February 25 against Boston. Shaq has been cleared to play and James should be back for a final tune-p before the playoffs begin. After losing only two games in March, the Cavs have gone just 2-4 in April. They will hope to be able to turn on their “A-game” once the playoffs start. Having James back will help. He averages 29.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.6 assists per game. It is still not certain whether James will actually suit up for this final game. The Cavs are clearly nervous about losing him. ... MORE

NBA Free Pick - Spurs at Dallas, Playoff game free pick
by FreePicks.org staff
The season’s final game for both of these teams could also be a preview for what is to come next week when the playoffs begin. The Western Conference is all bunched up, and the last game will ultimately determine where each team is seeded, but as it stands now, the Mavericks are the second seed and the Spurs are the seventh seed. This means that if the standings stay the way they are now, these two teams will meet in the first round. ... MORE

NBA Free Pick - Utah Jazz vs. Golden State Warriors
by FreePicks.org staff
Golden State hasn’t had much to play for all season. They are tied for last in their division. This has clearly been a rebuilding year, and they may have some signs of hope for the future. Their top pick from last year, Stephen Curry, is averaging 17.2 points, 5.9 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. His last five games have been even better, averaging 27.4 points and nearly notched a quadruple double against Minnesota last week. Monta Ellis has been a solid force all year long as well, scoring 25.5 points per game.. ... MORE

NBA Free Pick - Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls
by FreePicks.org staff
The Celtics have been up and down as of late, winning just five of their last ten games. It hasn’t mattered much, though, in terms of their standing in the division. The Celtics are the only team in the Atlantic Division with a winning record. Boston is guaranteed at least the fourth seed in the playoffs, but if they win out, and get some help from Atlanta, who is a game ahead, they could end up with the third seed. With Milwaukee and Miami currently tied with the same record, the fifth and sixth seeds are still up for grabs, so Boston won’t know who they are playing until the season is over. Paul Pierce leads the team with 18.1 points per game Kendrick Perkins grabs 7.6 rebounds a game and Rajon Rondo gets 9.8 assists and 2.4 steals each game.. ... MORE

Duke vs. Butler - NCAA Championship Game
by FreePicks.org staff
The Bulldogs have surprised everyone, though maybe their success should have been expected. Coming into the NCAA tournament, they had won 20 straight games, and now have won 25 in a row. They have one of the country’s best players in Gordon Hayward, who scores 15.6 points per game, and grabs 8.3 rebounds a game. Now with the winning streak and a Horizon League championship, Butler gets to play in its hometown of Indianapolis, in its first ever Final Four. The road to the national championship has been difficult. They haven’t won any game by more than seven points. With UT.. ... MORE

West Va. vs. Duke - Final Four
by FreePicks.org staff
West Virginia comes from a Big East conference that has not lived up to expectations in this NCAA tournament. The Mountaineers can help the conference regain some respect with a win in this game. West Virginia has sailed through the tournament somewhat easily. The first round posed no problem with a win against Morgan State. They beat Missouri and Washington in the next two rounds and then beat a favorite for the national championship, Kentucky in the Elite Eight. Kentucky couldn’t hit a basket, shooting just 34%. The Mountaineers took advantage, behind Da’Sean Butler’s 18 points. West Virginia has not been to a Final Four since 1959 when they lost to California by one point in the national championship.. ... Butler vs. Michigan State - Final Four
by FreePicks.org staff
Michigan State’s run to the Final Four couldn’t have gotten much closer. All of their games have been decided by seven points or less. All but one game has been decided by three points or less. They beat New Mexico State by three in the first round, then Maryland by two, and then they had a breather against Northern Iowa with a seven point win. In their Elite Eight win over Tennessee they were in yet another close game, eventually pulling out the win by one, 70-69. Raymar Morgan hit a free throw with two seconds remaining to put the Spartans in front for good. Durrell Summers led all scorers with 21 fo ... MORE

Duke vs. Baylor - Regional Finals
by FreePicks.org staff
Until the Sweet 16, Baylor had played in some relatively close games. The Bears beat Sam Houston State by nine points and Old Dominion by eight. Then in the Sweet 16, against a Saint Mary’s team that had already beaten Richmond and Villanova, they won easily by 23 points, 72-49. The Bears had a 29 point lead going into halftime. LaceDarius Dunn had a game high 23 points for Baylor and Tweety Carter chipped in 14. The Bears were too much for the Gaels, and now they are in the Elite 8 for the first time since the tournament expanded to 64 teams. ... MORE

Kentucky vs. West Va. - Regional Finals
by FreePicks.org staff
West Virginia has been battle-tested all year long, and they have proven to be ready with wins over Morgan State and Missouri in the first two rounds of the tournament. Their Sweet 16 game against Washington was a little more difficult, though. Playing without guard Darryl Bryant, who broke his foot in practice this week, the Mountaineers were already shorthanded. But then leading scorer Da’Sean Butler (17.5 points per game) injured his hand, which initially looked like it could be career threatening. After a minute though, Butler got up, and was able to continue playing. After playing it close for nearly the entire game, West Virginia finally got some separation with about 14 minutes left, and went onto win 69-56, reaching the Elite 8 for the first time since 2005. ... Butler vs. Kansas State - Regional Finals
by FreePicks.org staff
Butler beat UTEP in the first round of the tournament, then Murray State. These two teams were seeded 12 and 13 respectively. They were hard fought games, but Butler was the superior team. Then in the Sweet 16, Butler met up with Syracuse, a 1 seed. The Bulldogs only beat one ranked team this season, Ohio State. Granted the Buckeyes were without their star Evan Turner in that game. They went undefeated in conference play, but the Orange were the first really tough team they had to face in months. Still, they were victorious. While Butler played well, this was not the same Syracuse team that beat Gonzaga by 22. Eighteen turnovers by Syracuse helped Butler, especially in the first half. But, even when Syracuse made its run, and ended leading by four, Butler remained calm while Syracuse still looked flustered, and came away with a 63-59 win. Butler now has a 23 game winning streak, the longest in the nation. ... MORE

Sweet 16 Matchup - Michigan State vs. Northern Iowa
by FreePicks.org staff
In some ways, this game might seem like a let down for Northern Iowa. After knocking off the top seed in the tournament, Kansas, Michigan State doesn’t look nearly as dangerous. But with a berth in the Elite 8 at stake, this game is just as important. Michigan State will look to return to the Elite 8 once again. ... MORE

Sweet 16 Matchup - Ohio State vs. Tennessee
by FreePicks.org staff
Tennessee defeated San Diego State in the first round of the tournament by three and then knocked Ohio out with a 15 point win. It seems like the Volunteers are coming together at the perfect time. Tennessee finished third in the SEC behind Kentucky and Vanderbilt, but are now in the conversation for being one of the best teams in the country. And they deserve the recognition. The Volunteers are the only team that beat both Kansas and Kentucky this season. With those sorts of victories, Ohio State shouldn’t be a big deal. Scotty Hopson (12.5 points per game) and Wayne Chism (12.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game) lead this team. ... MORE

Sweet 16 Matchup - Washington vs. West Virginia
by FreePicks.org staff
The Huskies already beat one Big East team in this tournament. They upset Marquette 80-78 in the first round. Then they took out New Mexico last weekend, routing them 82-64. Washington is a team that underachieved all season long, but has started playing well just as the games got to be the most important. On their resume are losses to teams like Oregon, UCLA, and twice to USC. The only ranked opponent they played all year was Georgetown, and that was a loss too. The Huskies have clearly turned the corner though. Third seeded New Mexico simply couldn’t keep up with Washington. The Huskies shot 47% from three point range in the win. Quincy Pondexter led the team in scoring with 18 points, Isaiah Thomas had 15 points and seven assists, and Matthew Bryan-Amaning had 15 points and 9 rebounds. ... MORE

Sweet 16 Matchup - K State vs. Xavier
by FreePicks.org staff
Xavier beat Minnesota in the first round of the tournament, and then outlasted Pittsburgh in the second round. Out of all the storied programs that make are in the NCAA tournament every year, only Michigan State and Xavier have made the Sweet Sixteen in three straight years. Jordan Crawford continued his dominating play in the tournament with 27 points against the Panthers. Xavier controlled most of the game, but Pitt kept on coming back. It wasn’t until the very end, with a breakaway dunk by Crawford, that the Musketeers were finally able to wrap the game up. ... MORE

Sweet 16 Matchup - Kentucky vs. Cornell
by FreePicks.org staff
With so many other surprises in this tournament, Cornell has possibly been the biggest. Northern Iowa was the first team to knock off a number 1 seed, but no one anticipated anything from an Ivy League team. Especially a team that hadn’t ever won a tournament game before. The Big Red won the conference and then beat Temple and Wisconsin to get to this point. In their second round game, Cornell led the entire game, leading by as many as 24 points at one point. Louis Dale scored 26 and Ryan Wittman added 24. Cornell has already played two of the other 1 seeds in this tournament. They lost to Syracuse by 15 early on in the season, but lost by only five to Kansas in December. Could the third time be the charm? ... MORE

Sweet 16 Matchup - Syracuse vs. Butler
by FreePicks.org staff
Butler has been a great team all year long and has overcome many doubters. Some thought they would be the losers in what has become an annual 5 seed versus 12 seed upset. The Bulldogs were not interested in going out in the first round though, so they beat UTEP 77-59. Then Murray State came calling, looking to continue a miraculous run, and nearly pulled off the upset, but Butler held them off with a 52-54 win. Gordon Hayward leads this team with 15.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Ronald Nored, though, was the one who scored the most points against Murray State, with 15. ... MORE

NCAA Tourney Free Pick - Round 2 - Gonzaga vs. Syracuse
by FreePicks.org staff
The Bulldogs played well against Florida State, jumping out to a large early lead. Florida State couldn’t hit any of their shots, and Gonzaga simply outplayed them. In the second half, Florida State got things going and started to chip into the lead, but the Bulldogs were able to keep up the intensity, and held the Seminoles off with a 67-60 win. Matt Bouldin led all scorers with 17 points and Robert Sacre added 13 points and 9 rebounds. The Bulldogs are no strangers to the NCAA tournament, and have had their share of Cinderella runs. It would not be a surprise for them to pull off an upset over Syracuse. Their shooters will need to be on though, if they hope to master the Orange’s zone defense. Gonzaga has faced some tough competition this season. Granted, they were blown out by Duke, and lost to Michigan State, the two ranked teams they played this year. But they beat teams like Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and Illinois.   ... MORE

NCAA Tourney Free Pick - Round 2 - Butler vs. Murray State
by FreePicks.org staff
The Bulldogs were somehow the underdog coming into this game. But Butler now has 21 straight victories, and had little problem advancing to the round of 32. Before the game, many experts had Butler losing UTEP in the first round. It seems that most every year a 12 seed beats a 5 seed, and many people felt it was the Bulldogs that would go down. But there were no upsets in San Jose, in this game at least. The game was tied with about 15 minutes to go, but then Butler pulled away, winning easily, 77-59. Sheldon Mack led the way for the Bulldogs with 25 points, including 18 in the second half. Butler converted on 13 three-point attempts, UTEP had just four. Butler also made 11 more free throws than UTEP.   ... MORE

NCAA Tourney Free Pick - Round 2 - St. Marys vs. Villanova
by FreePicks.org staff
Saint Mary’s moves onto the round of 32 for just the second time ever, and first time in over 50 years. Way back in 1959 the Gaels beat Idaho State 80-71 for their first ever tournament victory. Coincidentally in their first round game against Richmond, they also won 80-71. The Gaels actually had one of the less exciting games of the day, as the result in their game was somewhat certain before the buzzer went off. Omar Samhan dominated in this game, scoring 29 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Saint Mary’s also shot 28 free throws, and made 20 of them compared to just 11-13 from the line for Richmond.   ... NCAA Tourney Free Pick - Round 1 - Kansas vs. Lehigh
by FreePicks.org staff
The Mountain Hawks have won five straight games and seven of their last eight. This is the fourth appearance in the NCAA tournament for Lehigh, and the first since 2004. That appearance was short lived though as they lost the play-in game and never truly had a taste of March Madness. The Mountain Hawks guaranteed their spot in the tournament with a win over Lafayette to win the conference tournament. Lehigh also won the Patriot League regular season championship. They are led by C.J. McCollum and his 18.9 points per game.  ... MORE

NCAA Tourney Free Pick - Round 1 - Syracuse vs. Vermont
by FreePicks.org staff
It is never smart to bet in favor of the 16 seed over the 1 seed, so this matchup shouldn’t be too much of a contest. Still, this game will give everyone some answers. Syracuse lost has lost two straight games coming into the tournament. They were beaten by a Louisville team that had to win and were playing the last game in their home stadium. Then Syracuse lost, after having a double-bye in the Big East tournament, to Georgetown, who simply outplayed them in a great game. The question is how Syracuse will bounce back. Senior center Arinze Onuaku also suffered a quadriceps injury in the loss to Georgetown. All tests came back negative, but indications are he may sit out at least the first game of the tournament. With a short seven man rotation already, Syracuse will need to get good minutes out of all their players and stay out of foul trouble.  ... MORE

NCAA Tourney Free Pick - Round 1 - Butler vs. UTEP
by FreePicks.org staff
The Bulldogs finished the season ranked at #11/8 in the polls. They won their conference, the Horizon league with a perfect 18-0 record. They won their conference tournament with a blowout win over Wright State. Granted they don’t have the toughest schedule in the nation, but their current winning streak is at 20, and that isn’t easy. Gordon Hayward (15.4 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game) and three others average double figures for this team. They played four top-25 ranked teams and lost three of them, but their win against Ohio State proves they can play with tough competition ... MORE

NCAA Tourney Free Pick - Round 1 - Vanderbilt vs. Murray State

Murray State is on a role. The Racers have won 21 of their last 22 games. Granted they are in the Ohio Valley Conference, which does not feature any other teams in the tournament. But a nearly perfect 17-1 conference record says something good about this team. It’s not like they are barely beating teams either. They have an almost 17-point win margin this year. This team is well balanced, featuring five players that average double figures. They are deep too, with ten players playing at least ten minutes per game, and no one playing over 27 minutes per game.   ... MORE

NCAA Tourney Free Pick - ODU vs. Notre Dame

Old Dominion knows a thing or two about beating a team from the Big East. The Monarchs defeated Georgetown, when they were the #11 team in the nation 61-57. Georgetown is now a 3 seed, so a 6 seed should be simple, right? Old Dominion won their conference tournament to get into the NCAA tournament. They are led by Gerald Lee and his 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. They have won eight out of nine games coming into the tournament. ... MORE

NCAA Basketball Tournament 2010
by FreePicks.org staff - Friday, March 12, 2010
If you're in love with any of the number one or two seeds in the tourney and wanna bet them, forget it, right? They just don't pay well enough. The number ones and twos have won basically almost every tourney the last twenty years, with the exception of a number three seed. The oddsmakers know this and they have made their odds accordingly. This is the year to bet an underseed in my opinion. I mean imagine this, you put put $100 on Wofford for fun and they win the championship and you can now pay off your house.   ... MORE

NCAAB - Free Pick - Marquette vs. Georgetown
by FreePicks.org staff - Friday, March 12, 2010
G'town comes in with a 22-9 record (10-8 conf.) and Marquette with a 22-10 record (11-7 conf.). These teams match up really well.  That's why we are leaning to taking points no matter who's favored in this one.  Bodog currently has the Hoyas favored by 4.  So we are taking Marquette.  We love streaking teams. Ride the streak is what I always say. Marquette has won 11 of their last 13 games and in my opinion are much better than they have played this season.  Lazar Hayward is a beast and is averaging 18.2 pts. per contest and pulling down over 7 boards as well. But that isn't even the best part.  The guard play of Marquette has been amazing.  Darius Johnson-Odom is coming off a 24 point performance.   ... MORE

NCAAB - Free Pick - Loyola vs. Gonzaga
by FreePicks.org staff
Number 14 regular-season West Coast Conference title winners and top-seeded, Gonzaga, will take on the fifth-seeded Loyola Marymount Lions tonight in the conference tournament at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane this evening.  Even with the loss of four starters from last season’s team, and a young team on the court this year, Gonzaga managed to go 12-2 in the conference and 25-5 overall.  One of their conference losses this season, however, was to the same team they’ll be playing tonight.  Gonzaga took a 66-74 road loss to the Lions on February 18th.  The Bulldogs will be at home tonight, and hope to see an ending scoreboard similar to the one they did when they took on the Lions in late January and won by 16 points.   Gonzaga has won the WCC tournament ten times.   ... NCAAB - Free Pick - UNC at Duke
by FreePicks.org staff
With so many high quality teams in men’s college basketball, a loss late in the season, even to a ranked team like #23 Maryland could be all it takes to go from a 1 to a 2 seed during March Madness. The Blue Devils had run off eight straight victories, until they met up with Maryland in their last game. After beating Maryland the first time around, the Terrapins would not go away and defended their home court with a 79-72 victory. Considering it was senior day, and Maryland wanted to make up for the defeat earlier in the season, Duke may not end up losing too much ground. This game against the Tar Heels, and the NCAA tournament will give them more than enough chances to prove their strength. Senior Jon Scheyer (18.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists per game) will look to close his regular season career with a win over arch-rival North Carolina, at his own senior day.   ... MORE

NCAAB - Free Pick - Kansas at Missouri
by FreePicks.org staff
After demolishing Colorado three games ago, Missouri has had a rough couple of games. First, a loss to #5 Kansas State by ten, then a nail-biting two-point win over cellar-dweller Iowa State. Despite the recent struggles, Missouri should be a lock for the NCAA tournament. With ten conference wins in the Big 12, one of the country’s best conferences, and quality wins over Kansas State (in their first match-up) and #25 Texas, the Tigers shouldn’t be too concerned with their fate. A win over #2 Kansas though, would make their at-large bid a sure thing. Sophomore Kim English leads the team with 14.1 points per game.    ... MORE

NCAAB - Free Pick - Syracuse at Louisville
by FreePicks.org staff
They have a winning record in the toughest conference in the country, and a better conference record than #20 Georgetown. They swept Connecticut this year, and even beat Syracuse in their first meeting in the Carrier Dome. But they have had bad losses too, including a 69-48 loss to Marquette. Failing to score 50 points in a game, when they average over 75 does not help. Sophomore Samardo Samuels leads the team with 15.9 points per game. Should Louisville pull off another win against the Orange, they are a lock for the tournament; a loss will mean they will have to make a deep run in the Big East tournament again to guarantee a bid.   ... NCAAB - Free Pick - West Va. at Villanova
by FreePicks.org staff
Villanova was able to shake off a blow-out loss to top-ranked Syracuse with a close win over Cincinnati, 77-73. Senior Scottie Reynolds, who is in the running to be named Big East Player of the Year, led six players in double figures, with 17 points, en route to the win. Now he prepares for his final regular season game as a student athlete. Villanova is trying to right the ship after losing four of their last eight, even including their win over the Bearcats. The matchup against the Mountaineers will go a long way toward proving whether Villanova has what it takes to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament, after last year’s final four run.   ... MORE

NCAAB - Kansas vs. Kansas State

NBA Game Preview - Knicks at Cavaliers
by FreePicks.org staff
Normally a game between a team that is 18 games under .500 against a team that is 30 games over .500 and the top seed in the conference wouldn’t generate any interest. This game is sure to generate some chatter though, as it is no secret that the Knicks are interested in signing Cavs guard LeBron James, who is a free agent at the end of the year. While it seems that James has a much better shot at winning quickly with the Cavs, the Knicks are unique in that they are the only team with enough salary cap room to sign two free agents to maximum contracts. This could mean that James could be paired with the likes of aChris Bosh, from the Raptors if things worked in New York’s favor.   ... MORE

NCAA Basketball - Syracuse vs. St. Johns
by FreePicks.org staff
There is not much doubt with who will emerge victorious, given the Orange’s superior talent and record, but the pressure is on. For the first time since the beginning of the 1989-90 season, Syracuse holds the top ranking in the country during the regular season. They achieved the top ranking just after the national championship as well in 2003. This is their first defense of that ranking. NBA Game Preview - Clippers vs. Kings
by FreePicks.org staff
The Clippers (24-34) meet up with the Kings (19-39) in Sacramento one game after Clipper’s Chris Kaman was ejected for two technical fouls 20 seconds into the second half when playing against Phoenix.  Losing an All-Star center was the last thing the struggling Clippers needed.  Kaman averages 19.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.  The 125-112 loss snapped their three game winning streak and gave them a 7-22 road record.  They’ll hope to improve to 8-22 on the road tonight.   ... Free Pick - NBA - Nuggets at Lakers
by FreePicks.org staff
Leading scorer Carmelo Anthony (29.2 ppg) leads the Nuggets in the chase to try and make up ground on the Lakers. Currently, the Lakers are the top seed in the playoffs and the Nuggets are the second seed. The Nuggets got a big win over the Cavaliers just after the All Star break, 118-116 in overtime. The next game though, was a disappointment, as they lost to the decimated Washington Wizards. The Nuggets have had to deal with news that their coach, George Karl, is suffering from cancer for the second time, keeping him away from the team.   ... MORE

Free Pick - NCAAB - Villanova at Syracuse - Saturday, February 27, 2010
by FreePicks.org staff
The Carrier Dome will be rocking on Saturday night with a sell-out crowd of at least 34,616 in attendance. This game will set the record for the highest attendance to an on-campus basketball game. Free Pick - NCAAB - (no. 1) Kansas at Oklahoma State - Saturday, February 27, 2010
by FreePicks.org staff
Top ranked Kansas travels to Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma State in this Big 12 match up.  The Jayhawks come in with a healthy 27-1 record to face a 19-8 basketball team.  The spread currently is Kansas -5.5.  Why is Kansas only favored by less than three baskets you may ask.  Because this is the classic let down spot that all top ranked teams in years past have lost outright.  They are looking forward to conference and NCAA tourneys and forgetting to show up and play the team at the tail end of their schedule.  But let me say this, Kansas is a very well prepared basketball team and I don't necessarily see the let down in their future.   ... Free Pick - NCAAB - Kentucky at Tennessee
by FreePicks.org staff
The Wildcats and freshman phenom John Wall take their nearly perfect regular season record to Tennessee. After suffering three losses in their last five games, the Volunteers try to right the ship and finish the season strong, heading into the SEC tournament. Free Pick - NBA - Portland at Chicago - February 26, 2010
by FreePicks.org staff
The trade deadline suggested the Bulls would be big players in free agency, but some focus on the offseason hasn't taken their attention away from the task at hand. The Trailblazers, meanwhile, are faced with the difficulty of playing in the Western Conference. Despite being seven games over .500 they are playing for their playoff lives. The Bulls on the other hand are more solidly in the playoff picture with the sixth seed, even though they are only two games over .500.   ... MORE

Free Pick - NBA - Cleveland at Toronto - February 26, 2010
by FreePicks.org staff
In what could be a possible playoff matchup this spring, a third team, the New York Knicks, might take some interest as well. The Knicks cleared enough salary cap space to be the only team able to sign two free agents at the maximum allowable salary. Chris Bosh and Lebron James, both free agents at the end of the year, would look pretty good together, at least to fans in Madison Square Garden.   ... MORE

Game Preview - Celtics Vs. Cavaliers - February 25, 2010
by FreePicks.org staff
The Cavaliers and Celtics may both see their window for a championship close this season, but for completely different reasons. Boston sees its big three, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen, who led them to a World Championship only two years ago, aging quickly. Cleveland faces the prospect of Lebron James leaving via free agency at the end of the year. In order to combat the exodus, the Cavs made a trade to bring Antawn Jamison to the midwest from DC, making them arguably the best team in the league, and contenders for the title.   ... MORE

Big East Game Preview - (4) Syracuse at Providence
by FreePicks.org staff
The Orange enters their seventh straight week ranked in the top-5 and currently own a one game lead for the top spot in the Big East. The Friars sit in the bottom quarter of the conference. This is the second meeting of the season for these two teams, the first a win for Syracuse, 85-68 in the Carrier Dome. Providence has a high-powered offense, though, as evidenced by its win over the Orange last year 100-94. Providence averages 81.5 points per game, just outpacing Syracuse's 80.6, both in the top-10 in the nation.   ... MORE

NBA Game Preview - Utah Jazz at Portland TrailBlazers
by FreePicks.org staff
The Portland Trailblazers (32-25) welcome the Utah Jazz (35-19) tonight for their final meeting this season, in what oddsmakers expect to be an extremely tight game.  Portland, playing at home, is favored by just a point.  Utah’s Deron Williams disagreed with the trade of Ronnie Brewer, but it didn’t seem to shake the Utah Jazz in their last 100-89 victory at Golden State.  A win tonight would extend their three game winning streak to four, and would make for a Utah sweep of the Trailblazers for the first time since the 2005-2006 season.  ... The NCAA Tourney bids come out in three weeks and the Syracuse Orangemen are feeling confident they will be a top seed.  Despite suffering a loss this past weekend, the Orangemen of Syracuse are still primed and poised for that top spot.  The loss that I spoke of is only their second of the season. Super Bowl Sunday Preview and Picks: Saints vs. Colts

The top two seeds make it to the Super Bowl this year. The Indianapolis Colts are taking on the New Orleans Saints.  The top seed from both sides making the big game is a bit of a rarity in most recent years.  In fact, it hasn't happened since 1993!  This is the Saints first trip to the big game and the Colts 2nd trip in four years.  To open the season, the Colts were 8-1 favs to win the Super Bowl and the Saints were slightly less favored at a rate of 18-1.  Both teams did not offer great odds because all experts knew they both would be good this year.  You had some of the bad teams getting 500-1 odds to win the Super Bowl in comparison..  ... The top ranked Longhorns take on the number 9 Kansas State Wildcats tonight in an exciting Big 12 matchup.  Texas remains undefeated with impressive wins over Michigan State and North Carolina in December. Damion James scored 26 points in their OT victory over Texas A&M last week.  Kansas State has recent wins over Texas A&M and a tough one against Colorado.  Their two losses came to Missouri and Missippi.  Surprising to some, most sources have Texas as a 1-point underdog at Kansas State.  The over/under is listed at 159.  ... NFL Playoff Game Preview: Jets at Chargers
by FreePicks.org staff
The Jets, perhaps the underdog of the weekend, take on the Chargers in what should be an exciting matchup.  Riding off 11 straight wins, and off a bye week, San Diego will try to step over the Jets on their hopeful ride to the big game.  San Diego (13-3) is no doubt one of the hottest teams in the league.  The only thing standing in their way of an extended postseason is the top-ranked Jets’ defense.  San Diego enters with game favored by 9 points.  The over/under is listed at 43.  ... NFL Playoff Game Preview: Vikings vs. Cowboys
by FreePicks.org staff
Vikings and Cowboys go at it in week 18 to determine who gets a seat in the NFC Championship game . As of now it is a tight spread, with only a 3-point spread in favor of the Vikings. With Minnesota at 12-4, and Dallas at 12-5, it’s sure to be an explosive matchup. Both teams have an arsenal of weapons at their disposal, as two of the most dominating defenses and high-powered offenses go head to head on Sunday. It’s sure to be a close offensive battle with both quarterbacks almost neck and neck for stats.  QB Brett Favre hangs on to the lead with 4,202 passing yards, and 33 TD’s. Not far behind, stands QB Tony Romo with 4,483 passing yards and 26 TD’s.  ... MORE

BCS Championship - Alabama vs. Texas
by FreePicks.org staff
Number 1 and Number 2 battle for the crystal football tonight in the 2009 College Football Season Finale.  Currently Alabama is listed at -4.5 with the total at 46.  Alabama made a statement by rolling over Florida on their way to this game.  Texas, on the other hand, snuck in with a last second field goal and win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big 12 Championship game.  Either way, a win is a win, and both teams are undefeated.  With TCU and Cincinnati going down in their bowl games, Boise State is the only other team with no losses.  Once again, the Broncos did everything they could to prove that they belong in the big game, but couldn’t manage to get past the BCS.  “What ifs” are irrelevant, and tonight it’s all about the Longhorns and Crimson Tide.  ... Alamo Bowl: Texas Tech vs. Michigan State
by FreePicks.org staff
Michigan State (6-6) take on Texas Tech (8-4) tonight in San Antonio, Texas.  Texas Tech is currently listed at -8.  The total is listed at 59. This bowl game might take the award for most surrounding controversy.  Michigan State recently suspended 9 players (many of them starters) after a November 22nd campus brawl.  Up to 14 players were lost total, which involved other incidents.  Texas Tech, as we all know, just recently fired Head Coach Mike Leach after alleged mistreatment of a player.  Despite all of the “drama” off the field, Tech looks to have the advantage on the field when it comes to talent.  Can Michigan State, who’s had to recently scramble to make personnel adjustments, be able to hang?  Can Texas Tech rally around interim Head Coach McNeill (defensive coordinator) in a time of uncertainty and walk away with a win?  Reports seem to suggest that the Red Raiders have been mostly unaffected by coaching changes and that they’ll be ready to play.  ... 2010 NBA Odds to Win Championship
by FreePicks.org staff
Kobe and the Lakers finally got over the hump and were able to win the NBA Championship post Shaq era. Phil Jackson earned his tenth NBA ring and was so happy he decided to come back and try for number 11. It is easy to say he and his Lakers are the favorites this year to win it all. They have added Ron Artest and kept the same core players from last year. But not so fast. Artest has more baggage than the undercarriage of a 747. Chemistry is a major factor in winning the whole thing and he may just be the poison in the pie.  MORE

Oklahoma at Texas

Tired of successful campaigns that only ended in obviously-uneven matchups against the SEC?   As good as they’ve been, they haven’t been able to win the ones that count.  In 2008 their two regular season losses were to number 1 (at the time) USC and number 3 Penn State.  On January 5th, 2009 Ohio State played Texas in the Fiesta Bowl (their fourth straight BCS bowl bid).  A win would have meant some  MORE

After a 2 loss regular season in 2007, Hokie hopes were high in 2008.  With a shocking first-game loss to East Carolina and losses to Boston College, Florida State, & Miami, they failed to improve their record.  They finished their season strong with rematch win over Boston College in the ACC Championship Game, and a victory in the Orange Bowl over the Cincinnati Bearcats   MORE

Notre Dame Team Preview and Schedule 2009
by FreePicks.org staff
Charlie Weis might be under more pressure than any other college football head coach this season.  With the rebuilding process over, and two down years, it’s now or never.  Considering their 3-win 2007 season, ’08 was a success.  Still, in his fifth year at Notre Dame, Coach Weis will need to lead the Fighting Irish to 9+ wins if he wants to keep his job.     MORE

In 2008 the Horned Frogs really put the pressure on their opponents.  They improved upon their ’07 five loss season ending the ’08 season with only 2 losses.  Seven times they held an opponent to a touchdown or less.  They pummeled New Mexico 26-3 during their first game in late August and then defeated Stephen F. Austin 67-7.  The winning streak didn’t stop there.  They beat Stanford 31-14 and then pummeled SMU 48-7. The Horned Frogs were quickly brought back down to Earth with 25 point loss to the Oklahoma Sooners.  They didn’t stay down for long, as they went on to hold their next four opponents to just one touchdown.  After finishing their season by defeating the Air Force 44-   MORE

The Red Raiders went 11-2 in the 2008 season, their best ever since the start of the Big 12 in 1994.  They went their first 10 games undefeated, but it wasn’t easy.  The Red Raiders went into an exciting overtime game against Nebraska winning 37-31 and upset top-ranked Texas in a battle to the end, winning 39-33.  The following week they beat ninth ranked Oklahoma State 56-20.  Texas Tech was unstoppable.  Or were they?  Their first loss came late in their season at Oklahoma.  It was a devastati   MORE

Southern California Team Preview and Schedule 2009

As expected, the Trojans dominated the Pac-10 conference in 2008.  With ease they started the season by beating Virginia 52-7. They then defeated the Big Ten’s powerful Ohio State 35-3.  Unexpectedly, they lost their third game 27-21 against Oregon State, but that didn’t keep the Trojans down for long.  The team came back strong winning their last nine regular season games.  Finishing 11-1 in the season, the Trojans missed a shot at the national title but did go on to play in the Rose Bowl where they defeated Penn State 38-24.   MORE

In 2008 the Utes did everything that they could to show us what they were made of.  Final season record: 13-0.  They started the season off by beating Michigan 25-23, UNLV 42-21, and then showed in-state rival Utah State who was boss by defeating them 58-10.  They were then held back in the rankings by closer wins over Air Force (30-23), Weber State (37-21) and Oregon State (31-28).  Their winning streak continued as they beat Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico, TCU, San Diego State and BYU.   MORE

Boise State Team Preview and Schedule 2009
by FreePicks.org staff
Last year Chris Petersen led his team to a 12-0 season.  He’s capable of doing it again.  With a win against Oregon and a one-point loss to TCU in December they proved, once again, that they’re capable of hangin’ with the big boys in the BCS.  Over the past decade Coach Peterson has the best winning percentage in the country at .843.  Another undefeated regular season could soon land Boise State in another major bowl game; maybe even the National Championship game.  Voters have proven in recent years that they’re willing to move non-BCS schools up through the rankings as long as they keep winning games.   MORE

Oklahoma Sooners Team Preview and Schedule 2009
by FreePicks.org staff
At the end of the 2008 regular season, the Sooners saw themselves on top of the BCS Standings.  Heisman Trophy winning Quarterback Sam Bradford led the team to an outstanding 11 season wins.   They started off by winning their first five games and then lost to their bitter rivals, the Texas Longhorns, 45-35.  As disappointing as the loss may have been, the team turned around to win their final six games.  The Sooners were awarded the Big 12 South title when they blew Missouri away in the conference title game.  The final score was 62-21.  Unfortunately for Sooners’ fans, they lost to Florida (14-24) in the BIG ONE: The BCS National Championship Game.   MORE

Penn State Nittany Lions Team Preview and Schedule 2009
by FreePicks.org staff
The Lions immediately brought in nine wins at the start of the 2008 season.  Their glory was put to an end in November when they played the Iowa Hawkeyes.  In the last minute of the game, the Hawkeyes kicked a game-winning field goal.  They then dominated Indiana (34-7) and Michigan State (49-18).  It was enough to get them a spot in a major BCS bowl game: The Rose Bowl.  They played and were defeated by USC.  The final score was 38-24.   MORE

Texas LongHorns Team Preview and Schedule 2009
by FreePicks.org staff
Despite a late season disappointment, the Texas Longhorns had another good one in 2008.  They had an 8-0 start with 4 non-conference wins.  Their hopes were high for a Big 12 South title after beating Colorado, Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State.  A last-minute shocking loss to Texas Tech in their 10th game brought them down to Earth.  Oklahoma took their spot in the Big 12 Championship game and dreams of a national title were shattered.  They were forced to settle for a Fiesta Bowl bid versus Ohio State.  The Longhorns came out on top 24-21.    MORE

Alabama Crimson Tide Team Preview and Schedule 2009
by FreePicks.org staff
With Nick Saban in charge, it’s no surprise that Alabama cruised through the 2008 season undefeated.  They started off by thrashing Clemson 34-10 and followed up with victories over Georgia and Tennessee during the regular season.  Alabama also beat Auburn 36-0 in the annual Iron Bowl rivalry.  With a 12-0 record, they faced Florida in the SEC Championship Game.  The to-be 2008 championship Gators proved to be too much for Alabama to handle, as they were defeated 31-20.  Their misfortune continued as they played against Utah in the Sugar Bowl and once again came out defeated 31-17.  .   MORE

Florida Gators Team preview and Schedule 2009
by FreePicks.org staff
With the team being mostly underclassmen last year, the Gators impressed us once again.  They started off their season strong by defeating Hawaii and Miami.   Feeling invincible they went on to play Ole Miss the 27th of September in Gainesville, but came out defeated in a 31-30 major upset.  Outraged with the outcome quarterback Tim Tebow promised that he and the rest of the team would play like never before for the rest of the season, and they did.   MORE
