NFL Team Preview
Cleveland Browns
2009 Record: 5-11
The Browns couldn’t get anything going last year. That is, not until the very end of the year. Cleveland went 1-11 before winning 4 in a row at the end of the season, which included a 13-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The late-season efforts the Browns made to erase some embarrassing play might have saved Eric Mangini’s job and given Browns fans reason to be optimistic. Still, their 2009 performance prompted some changes on and off the field. Mike Holgrem took over as Team President and Tom Heckert is now General Manager. Unlike before, Mangini’s role will be reduced to that of Head Coach alone. Last year, he made nearly all personnel decisions. The Browns find themselves rebuilding again.
Don’t expect the Browns’ most interesting draft pick to see any playing time this season. According to Holgrem, they’ll have Texas’ Colt McCoy sitting on the bench and learning to prevent forced-in scarring that they’ve seen before.
So far, the Browns are 1-2 in the preseason. They won their first game at Green Bay (27-24) and lost back-to-back games against St. Louis and Detroit. They take on the Bears before their first regular season at Tampa Bay.
