NFL Houston Texans Team Preview 2009

Houston Texans – 2009 Preview

2008 Record: 8-8

Head Coach: Gary Kubiak

After a 0-4 start last year, the Houston Texans rebounded to win 8 out of their next 12 matches.  Might the 2009 season be a breakthrough year for a team that’s only entering their 8th year in the league?  The one that Coach Kubiak needs to keep his job?  The one that gets the Texans to the playoffs?  Being surrounded by 3 other playoff-potential teams in the AFC South, it’s hard to say.

The Texans’ offense, although lacking depth, might be starting to peak.  This will be Matt Schaub’s third year at QB, the offensive line should remain solid, and most key players that contributed towards a successful offensive attack last year, return.

The defense, which gave up 335 yards and 24.6 points per game last year, has to be better.  The Texans made some off-season adjustments in an attempt to get the defense up to speed.  First pick Brian Cushing from USC and free agency additions Cato June and Buster Davis (both linebackers) will be joining the squad.  The Texans also signed linemen Shaun Cody and Antonio Smith.  In order for the Texans’ defense to be successful this year, they’ll need to be able to stop the run.  Last year they allowed 122.6 yards per game.

The Houston Texans start off their preseason at Kansas City on Saturday, August 15th, 8PM ET.  They then play New Orleans at home on Saturday the 22nd, Minnesota at home on  Monday the 31st, and at Tampa Bay on Friday, September 4th – just 9 days before their regular season begins.
