Oakland Raiders – 2009 Preview
2008 Record: 5-11
Head Coach: Tom Cable
Another Oakland Raiders season is quickly approaching. This year will be Tom Cable’s first full season with the team. He earned the permanent positions with a late 3-3 stretch in ’08. Will the 2009 season bring the usual? They finished 4-12 in 2007 and 5-11 in 2008. 6-10 this year? Maybe. 2 of their wins last year were at the end of the season, which might have given them some much-needed momentum to carry with them this year, but they have a tough 2009 schedule.
We might see some improvement in 2009, but not much has changed. QB JaMarcus Russell does have some tools, but he’s not very accurate. The Raiders finished last in passing last year. They’ll have to count on their running game (with Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas, and Michael Bush) to keep up. The Raiders defense is also unlikely to look much different than they did last year, finishing 24th in their ability to stop the run. They gave up 4.5 yards per carry.
Ultimately, we’ll have to see what Tom Cable can do with a full season as head coach. Considering the recent Head Coach turnover rate, the Raiders will have to do much better if he plans on keeping his job.
The Oakland Raiders start off their preseason against the Dallas Cowboys at home on Thursday, Aug 13. They then play San Francisco at Candlestick Park, New Orleans at home, and Seattle at Qwest field.
