Indianapolis Colts – 2009 Preview
2008 Record: 12-4
Head Coach: Jim Caldwell
Last year was the first season since 2002 that the Indianapolis Colts didn’t win the AFC South title. After a rough season start, however, Peyton Manning and the Colts won 9 games in a row, finished 12-4, and got a wild card berth to the playoffs. Their season came to an end when they lost their wild-card round playoff game to the Chargers. They lost 17-24 in overtime.
The 2009 season should start and end with even better results. The Colts’ rough start in 2008 may have had something to do with Manning’s knee injury recovery which resulted in missed training camp prior to the season. This year, he’s healthy and the team should get off to a smooth start. Well, maybe. The Colts will have to adjust to a brand new coaching staff. After Tom Dungy’s retirement, Assistant Coach Jim Caldwell was promoted to head coach. After taking the job, he fired Defensive Coordinator Ron Meeks and Special Teams Coach Russ Purnell. Although some major changes have been made, the club was prepared for changes in staff and the Colts’ core remains intact. Expect a relatively smooth transition.
The Colts start off their preseason at home vs. Minnesota on Friday, August 14th at 7:30PM ET. They then play Philadelphia at home on August 20th, at Detroit on August 29th, and at Cincinnati on September 3rd – ten days before their regular season begins.
