The Worst is over for the Wolverines
First year Michigan football head coach Rich Rodriguez didn’t have much to brag about at the end of the 2008 college football season. The installation of his trademark spread option offense required adjustment. It was a major adjustment that caused issues that wouldn’t be resolved overnight. Michigan ended the season 3-9 only beating Miami (Ohio), Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The 2008 season was Michigan’s first losing season in over 40 seasons and with 9 losses the worst losing season in the history of the program. Their 33 year consecutive bowl streak ended. In addition to that, Ohio State’s victory over Michigan in November was the fifth straight, the most consecutive Michigan losses to Ohio State.
With a season as devastating as the one that took place last year, fans aren’t looking back. Instead, they’re wondering what they can expect out of the 2009 college football season? It’s sure to be a better one.

It’s important to remember that Rich Rodriguez has a proven track record for success. He was probably the most successful coach in West Virginia’s history. It’s also important to remember why things went so wrong last year. The loss of a few key players and a transition to a completely new offensive system created a recipe for disaster. The team must rebuild. Rodriguez needs some time to make adjustments and find the right players. The 2008 season is probably worse than any other season the program will ever see. Expect huge improvements next year. Here’s why:
- First years are almost always the worst – The 2008 Wolverine’s remind me of the Cornhuskers. Remember Nebraska’s 2004 season? Bill Callahan’s first year as head coach and switch over to the west coast offense resulted in a 5-6 season. It was their first losing season since 1961. They went on to win 8 in 2005. For Michigan, the worst part is over.
- Experience - In 2009 we’ll see more experienced players in positions that they are better suited for. Offensively, you will see more organization on the field and players more comfortable with the game plan. Last year Michigan was only working with one returning offensive starter. You’ll recognize more names on the field this year. Defensively, you’ll see more talent and depth.
- More Quarterback certainty – Although experience will be limited in the top-spot on the field, Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson bring hope. They will both have the opportunity to win the starting spot.
Besides the few key notes that I listed, you’ll see that Michigan is looking at an easier 2009 schedule than they faced last year. A few early season wins will go a long way towards building the confidence of the team.
2009 season prediction: 7-5 (Maybe even an 8-4) season, with a bowl game appearance. They might even give Ohio State a run for their money. With the arrival of QB Devin Gardner in 2010, the future of Michigan is looking even brighter beyond the 2009 season. |
