#10/8 West Virginia Mountaineers (23-6, 12-5 Big East) at #9 Villanova Wildcats (24-5, 13-4 Big East) Wachovia Center, Philadelphia, PA 12 PM, 3/6
Villanova and West Virginia meet up in the final game of the regular season to determine which team claims second place. West Virginia is currently a game behind the Wildcats, so with a win, they would move into a tie. A win for the Wildcats means sole possession of the second seed in the Big East tournament.
Villanova was able to shake off a blow-out loss to top-ranked Syracuse with a close win over Cincinnati, 77-73. Senior Scottie Reynolds, who is in the running to be named Big East Player of the Year, led six players in double figures, with 17 points, en route to the win. Now he prepares for his final regular season game as a student athlete. Villanova is trying to right the ship after losing four of their last eight, even including their win over the Bearcats. The matchup against the Mountaineers will go a long way toward proving whether Villanova has what it takes to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament, after last year’s final four run.
West Virginia has hung around the top 10 in the rankings all season long. They have not disappointed. Da’Sean Butler, a senior, averages 17.1 points, 3.3 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game. He will be one of the keys if the Mountaineers hope to win.
Villanova is a higher scoring team (83.3 ppg) than the Mountaineers (74.9 ppg), but also gives up more points (72.8 ppg) than West Virginia does (64.8). The Wildcats have been nearly perfect at home this year with a 13-1 record, while the Mountaineers have a respectable 7-4 record on the road.
In their last meeting a month ago, Villanova beat West Virginia 82-75. Reynolds scored 19 of his 21 points in that game in the final 13 minutes. Butler on the other hand shot just 2-12 for 13 points. Villanova will try to defend their home court, and go for the season sweep. All a nice send-off for Scottie Reynolds.
