North Carolina Tar Heels (16-14, 5-10 ACC) at #4 Duke Blue Devils (25-5, 12-3 ACC) Cameron Indoor Stadium, Durham, NC, 9 PM, 3/6
Duke was a favorite for the fourth number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament until last Wednesday, North Carolina has been down all year. As North Carolina looks to find some silver lining to the season, Duke will look to pick up the pieces and try to rebuild their resume. In yet another meeting in the classic college basketball rivalry, drama is bound to find itself somewhere in this story.
With so many high quality teams in men’s college basketball, a loss late in the season, even to a ranked team like #23 Maryland could be all it takes to go from a 1 to a 2 seed during March Madness. The Blue Devils had run off eight straight victories, until they met up with Maryland in their last game. After beating Maryland the first time around, the Terrapins would not go away and defended their home court with a 79-72 victory. Considering it was senior day, and Maryland wanted to make up for the defeat earlier in the season, Duke may not end up losing too much ground. This game against the Tar Heels, and the NCAA tournament will give them more than enough chances to prove their strength. Senior Jon Scheyer (18.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists per game) will look to close his regular season career with a win over arch-rival North Carolina, at his own senior day.
The Tar Heels are in rebuilding mode. After losing so much to the NBA draft last year, there was little doubt that there would be struggles for the 2009-10 campaign. Senior Deon Thompson (13.8 points, 6.2 rebounds per game) and sophomore Ed Davis (12.9 points, 9.2 rebounds) have done all they could to give North Carolina a chance to win. It just hasn’t been enough.
North Carolina has won two straight games. They would love to ruin senior day for the Blue Devils and cause a little panic in Durham. They would also like to make up for their loss earlier in the season, a 64-54 win for Duke.
North Carolina has been horrible on the road this season, just a 2-7 record. Duke is perfect at home with a 17-0 mark. This could be North Carolina’s highlight of the season, but don’t expect too much.
Duke is favored by 14.5 points. The total is listed at 146.
