The Orange enters their seventh straight week ranked in the top-5 and currently own a one game lead for the top spot in the Big East. The Friars sit in the bottom quarter of the conference. This is the second meeting of the season for these two teams, the first a win for Syracuse, 85-68 in the Carrier Dome. Providence has a high-powered offense, though, as evidenced by its win over the Orange last year 100-94. Providence averages 81.5 points per game, just outpacing Syracuse's 80.6, both in the top-10 in the nation.
The offense for Syracuse has struggled a bit lately, having only topped 80 points once since mid-January, and that happened in their last game against the Friars. Syracuse narrowly defeated Georgetown in their last game, after the Hoyas made a furious comeback late, and the Orange suffered their second loss of the season the game before, scoring just 60 against Louisville. The lack of scoring is due in part to multiple injuries to leading scorer Wesley Johnson (16.0 ppg), a first-year transfer from Iowa State University. Freshman Brandon Triche, after a hot start to the season, has struggled more as of late. The grueling Big East schedule Syracuse has had to face may also be helping to slow them down, but certainly is preparing the team for March.
The last five weeks have been painful for Providence, losing six straight games and eight of nine in that time span. Their only win came over Connecticut, who was ranked #19 at the time. Syracuse had a hand in the six game losing streak as well. Without much hope left in the season, leading scorer Jamine Peterson (18.9 ppg) and his team will try for an upset.
Syracuse is currently favored by 8.5 points. The only thing that could keep them from winning this game is if they are looking forward to this weekend when they are playing primetime GameDay basketball on ESPN against the other Big East title contender, Villanova University.
