#2 Kentucky Wildcats (26-1, 11-1 SEC) at #17 Tennessee Volunteers (20-7, 8-5 SEC) 12 PM 2/27/10
The Wildcats and freshman phenom John Wall take their nearly perfect regular season record to Tennessee. After suffering three losses in their last five games, the Volunteers try to right the ship and finish the season strong, heading into the SEC tournament. An upset of the #2 team in the country, and current SEC leader would be a good start.
The Volunteers are coming off of a loss to Florida in their last game, 75-62. The loss allowed Florida to jump one game ahead of Tennessee for third overall in the SEC and all but guaranteed Florida admission to the NCAA tournament. Wayne Chism who leads the Vols with 12.9 points per game and almost 7 rebounds struggled against the Gators. He will have his hands full against the Wildcats.
Kentucky has rolled over their opponents all year, suffering their only loss to South Carolina in late January. Wall continues to impress with 16.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game. He gets a great deal of help though. Four players on the team, including Wall, average double figures. Demarcus Cousins (16.1 ppg), Patrick Patterson (14.8 ppg), and Eric Bledsoe (10.8 ppg), along with Wall, will lead the offensive charge against the Vols.
In their only other matchup of the season, Kentucky won 73-62 at home. Bobby Maze led the way for the Vols with 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome 24 points from Wall and 16 from Bledsoe, including 3 three-pointers. The game was close, tied at 52 with nine minutes to go, but Kentucky was able to pull away.
Now the Volunteers look for revenge, and a boost to their tournament resume. Kentucky lost its only game on the road this season, and Tennessee has won all but one at home. Both teams have a lot to play for, and this is a nationally televised game as well. Kentucky’s firepower may be too much to overcome.
Kentucky is listed at -3. The total is listed at 141.
